Sept 3rd – New season – Penny Police, Leslie Mendelson & Paul Aiden at Century Club

Tonight, before we get the new season going in earnest we’re dipping our toes into the swish, debonair waters of Century on Shaftesbury Avenue. It’s a one off (or is it?) special at one of London’s classiest members joints.

We’re delighted to have put together a bill of three of our all time favourites. See below for info on the acts – and email rsvp@karouselmusic.com for a guest list spot. We need names in advance – there’s only 40 spots up for grabs, so get on it pronto!

///Penny Police///

The finest of Nordic Noir meets Folk-Pop… We first came across Marie Fjeldsted and her project Penny Police in a dark, murky venue in Hamburg at the Reeperbahn festival. When Karousel’s Chris found himself getting all teary in the first chorus of ‘I do Care’ (Sink Or Sail EP), we knew we’d found something special; and when Marie and her producer Kaspar came to London to do our packed Soho show, and a rammed Wood Green in Karamel, it was pure joy watching people’s reaction to her. From the opening hum and crackle of the Wurly on ‘Save Me A Coin’ she had the room.

Initially it’s impossible to believe English isn’t her native tongue; but maybe it’s that distance that allows her to drop lines in that say so much, so simply. Her voice, like her lyrics, are full of a genuinely warm humanity that it’s impossible not to fall in love with. One of the first signings to Karousel Music Publishing, we’re incredibly proud of her. ‘I Do Care’ is the song currently used by the NSPCC for their ‘Safe and Sound’ campaign.Tonight appearing with top Danish guitarist Linus.

///Leslie Mendelson///

Grammy nominated New Yorker Leslie made her way over to the UK when legendary management company Trinifold (The Who) fought off a host of interest in the states to snap her up. A songwriter and performer of sheer class, writing songs somewhere between Carole King, Karen Carpenter and Sheryl Crow, but in places with the edge of early Tom McCrae. Currently making her new record with legendary producer Glyn Johns (Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Easybeats, The Band, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, Eric Clapton, The Clash et etc!) While she’s not officially signed to Karousel, she’s part of the family and we’re very proud to introduce you to her tonight. We’re trying to hold on to her as long as we can, New York should never have let her on the plane…

///Paul Aiden///

While these days Paul is the songwriting brains behind a series of dance hits and a sought after pop writer, as well as the production and cowriting wizard behind his much feted collaboration ‘Youth’, it was originally a tip off from Sony that led us to discover him as an artist. Signed to Universal Australia back in the noughties, Paul has a power and an energy to his performances that will blow your socks off. We’re made up that he’s dusting the acoustic off for a night, playing some of the anthemic singalongs that got everyone talking about him as an artist not too long ago. One of those superb hidden gems that’s fallen off the Manchester mine-cart. You’re going to love him!
